The 33-year-old was made available for transfer by League One Swindon and could have stayed at that level, but opted to drop down to the Conference.

Speaking exclusively to the News/Gazette, he said: “I had to make a decision on do I want to stick around League One for a year or so and not know what my future would be?

“Or do I want to go and link up again with the gaffer, who’s given me my best memories and get involved in this project with Luton to try and help get them up?

“I’d be a liar if I said it (dropping down) wasn’t an issue. No-one wants to drop down divisions, they all want to play as high as they can.

“But sometimes you’ve got to look at the bigger picture. I thought, in two years time I could still be a League player with Luton Town.”

Benson is linking up again with Town boss John Still, who plucked the forward from Sunday football side White Ensign when in charge at Dagenham & Redbridge.

With Luton struggling to score goals so far this term, netting just three in five games, Benson, who notched 28 the season Daggers won the Conference, doesn’t feel under any undue pressure either.
