Benson felt Town should have claimed Grimsby win

The forward, who was making his home debut after moving to Kenilworth Road on a season-long loan from Swindon Town, said: “That’s the emotion, disappointment really. We played well, the defence did really well, the midfield worked really hard and it was just the finishing touch.

“I’m as fully at fault as anyone as I had a couple of chances first half and should have done better.

“We played well enough to win a game of football and we haven’t. We’ve only got the one point, so we need to build on that for next week.

“Hopefully if we play as well as we did last week and if I’m starting, I can get a goal.

“It’s massive in any game. If you can get the first goal, especially at home, it opens things up and you tend to get on and maybe get two or three.”

Hatters dominated the opening period, with Benson sending a couple of efforts wide, while he was also denied by a goal-line clearance.

After the break, the Mariners came into the game a touch more as he said: “I don’t think we were in as much control as we were first half. I still think we were knocking on the door but without the same sort of penetration.

“It’s very hard to put in two 45s of what we did in the first half as I thought we were very dominant.

“They came into a little bit more second half, but I was pleased with the amount of crosses we got into the box.

“On another day, it could have had two maybe three.”

Benson was upfront again with Town striker Andre Gray, who is yet to get off the mark for the new campaign.

The forward believes that they are capable of forging a partnership similar to one he had in his Dagenham & Redbridge days, adding: “He’s totally different to me. Andre’s quick, direct, likes to get behind people, take people on, and I think we worked quite well.

“When I played with Craig Mackail-Smith, we were two different players but it worked really well.

“Hopefully me and Andre can strike up a relationship and start scoring.”
