The 34-year-old joined Town on a season-long loan in August, scoring 18 goals as Luton earned a return to the Football League.

After finding out about his release via the internet, he is now happy to make Kenilworth Road his long-term home.

Benson said: “We’ve discussed it, I’m very happy with what they’ve offered and it’s just a case of signing on the dotted line.

“My contract’s not actually expired, so I have to wait until the 30th of June before I sign, but I’m happy with what’s been offered and I want to stay.”

Benson also admitted he would be happy to end his career with the Hatters, but only after securing another promotion for the club.
