Beckwith aiming to be a regular on Hatters scoresheet

DEFENDER Dean Beckwith is hoping to weigh in with his fair share of goals after opening his account against Forest Green Rovers in midweek, writes Mike Simmonds

With 70 minutes on the clock, the former Northampton centre-half rose highest to nod home, for a debut strike and his 10th league goal in over 200 appearances.

Hatters’ centre-half pairing from last season, Zdenek Kroca and George Pilkington, notched 10 goals between them, so Beckwith wants to continue the theme this year.

He said: “I don’t think I’ve had my best pre-season and wanted to put that behind me.

“It’s league games that count now and I want to muck in with my fair share of goals.

“It’s a good start for me. I got three last year and had a few cleared off the line.

“I go up for set-pieces at every opportunity as me and Will (Antwi) went up against Forest Green.

“We’ve got some great delivery, so it’s a good opportunity for us to get goals.”

It was a much changed backline for Town on Tuesday night with three players making their debut and Beckwith admitted they will take time to settle.

He said: “I think so, because there’s me, Curtis (Osano) and Will who are new to the club.

“We played in pre-season but when you get that out of the way it’s a different intensity and there are three points weighing on it.

“It’s tough, but I thought we defended well as a team, especially with Keano (Keith Keane), Alex (Lawless) and Jake (Howells) in there protecting us.

“But we switched off for the goal, so 95 per cent we’re happy with our defending, it’s just the set-piece we’re disappointed with.”
