Barr, who took over from departed Red Dragons boss Andy Morrell just 24 hours before the match, saw Luton romp to a 5-0 victory on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the Daily Post afterwards, he said: “Luton are the best team I’ve seen in the Conference in many, many years. John (Still) has got them absolutely buzzing.

“From kick-off we had a cross on 15 seconds and you think ‘here we go’ and then (Luton’s) first look at our half we are one down, the second look at our half we are two down, and it’s an uphill struggle from there.

“We get into good positions and the crossing lets us down, or the finish, but I’m taking nothing away from Luton who were magnificent and deserve to go up as champions.

“I’m gutted for the lads because we came and thought if we were at our A game we could – I’m not saying we could beat them – give them a game.”

The result saw Town move 14 points clear at the top after Cambridge were beaten 1-0 at Braintree too and Barr has no doubt Kenilworth Road will be hosting League Two football next year.

He continued: “Luton were ruthless, they took their chances and their training must be a joy to watch because they are all at it.

“Fair play to Luton, they deserve to be champions.”

On Barr’s claims, Town manager John Still said: “It’s always nice when people talk well about your football club and so that’s fantastic that someone thinks that.

“I suppose in the form we’re in, it can be something that people say, I’d be disrespectful to him by saying that doesn’t matter and I wouldn’t do that.

“But what I would say is we have to continue what we’re doing.

“How we’ve performed when we’ve played Wrexham, or he may have come to see us play as well is fantastic, but I’m fully aware that the form we have to maintain until the end of the season.”
