The incident left the Town midfielder with a double leg break as referee Robert Whitton overturned his initial yellow card as he subsequently dismissed Nurse.

However, Barnet’s Twitter coverage condemned the decision at the time, saying: “What an absolute spineless decision from the referee who has changed his mind because of John Still’s f’ing and blinding.”

The tweet has since been deleted and the member of staff disciplined.

A club statement read: “Barnet FC wishes to apologise for any offence caused by our matchday coverage yesterday.

“During our live Twitter commentary a number of inappropriate tweets were posted and the member of staff concerned has been disciplined.

“Everybody at Barnet Football Club would like to wish Johnathan Smith the speediest of recoveries.”
