On Luke Guttridge’s 97th-minute leveller and the 1-1 draw, he said: “You can’t legislate for things like that happening. Not only that but I thought we had a blatant penalty first half and he didn’t give that our way so we just start to wonder.

“But those things happen when you come to places like this, but to run over so long when he’s put four minutes on and then he’s said to the players on the pitch there’s a minute to go and then he’s played another two minutes.

“It feels like a defeat now. What I did say to the players was if we had taken our chances we could have sewn the game up. But if they’d said you’re going to get a point at Luton at the start of the season I suppose we would have been happy.

“But having played like we did and the manner in which we lost obviously it’s sickening really.”

Goalscorer Chris Holroyd was a particular thorn in Luton’s side, as Askey continued: “He could have had three, Scott Boden could have scored, the one that Scott missed seemed to be a sitter, I’m not sure what happened there and we should have had a blatant penalty.”

But Askey felt his side had raised their game against the Hatters, adding: “I think when we play against the better teams who try and play and come at us then it suits us because we have got people who can play. Playing on a decent pitch where there’s a crowd it lifts us, but again for me it’s another improvement as we started the season not so well. We played Lincoln and I thought we did really well and we were unlucky not to get something and we came here today and should have won so if we can keep improving like that we will be OK.

“You’ve always got to look at the good points but what we’ve got to make sure is that we take it into the next game and make sure we continue to put in the effort we are putting in and keep playing like we’re doing.

“What was pleasing today was the amount of chances that we created which we haven’t probably done in other games. So if we keep doing that then we’ll be OK.”
