All the odds as Town travel to Wrexham

The last rights were administered at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday evening as relegation-threatened Hyde put the final nail in the Luton Town promotion coffin and ended their own six-game run without a win, writes Charlie McCann.

New manager John Still must have been extremely disappointed with Town’s performance and one point from two very winnable looking home games was hardly the return he or the Hatters’ faithful were looking for this week.

What is clear that a season that promised so much has spectacularly failed to deliver and the hot favourites in August are now nearer to relegation than promotion! Town are 66/1 for promotion at betvictor.com and, despite an industry top price quote, this will only interest the most optimistic Hatters’ fans.

They are 16/1 to make the top five which is obviously still mathematically possible with 33 points on offer. More realistically the new boss must start planning for the future and the massive challenge of getting the Club back into the Football League.

Mansfield Town have shown that a big squad can be trimmed during the season to produce a very competitive team and after winning eight Conference games in a row the Stags are the new favourites for the title at 7/4.

The race to return to the Football League is a close one with five teams still harbouring strong hopes of automatic promotion and the play-offs will once again be very keenly contested.

Kidderminster lost their opening five games and drew the next five so it is remarkable they find themselves just 6/1 to top the section and 15/8 for promotion after winning 18 of their last 20 Conference games.

Grimsby and Wrexham, who face each other in the FA Trophy final a week on Sunday both have hopes of doing the double with the Welshmen in the stronger position, joint leaders and seven points better off than the team from Cleethorpes.

Town, ironically, may still have a big say on where the title goes given they have to play Wrexham, Grimsby and Newport between now and the end of the campaign.

The Dragons play host to Town on Saturday and will be hoping their big Wembley date will not distract their number one goal of promotion.

Wrexham are a shade of odds on at 10/11 with the draw 13/5 and Luton 10/3. The price on an away success does make some appeal as Wrexham are sure to have next weekend’s final on their minds and its not often the Hatters are such a big price for a Conference game.

I would suspect it’s the biggest price they have been for a League match this season and John Still will demand a performance for the loyal and long suffering away support.

Be lucky.
