Late replacement Simon Ainge is hoping he’s grabbed his opportunity under new Town boss John Still after stepping in for ill captain Ronnie Henry on Saturday, writes Mark Wood.

Ainge, 25 helped the Hatters to a goalless draw at title-hopefuls Wrexham as he replaced Luton’s skipper in a slightly-unaccustomed right-back slot just hours before kick-off.

On when he found out, Ainge said: “A couple of hours before. Obviously I knew Ron was not well so I knew there was a chance I might be playing, but a couple of hours before just when we got in the changing room.”

It was his first start under Still and first since January 1, so despite it coming as a surprise and with no time to practice he was ‘desperate to impress’.
