Ainge, 25 helped the Hatters to a goalless draw at title-hopefuls Wrexham as he replaced Luton’s skipper in a slightly-unaccustomed right-back slot just hours before kick-off.

On when he found out, Ainge said: “A couple of hours before. Obviously I knew Ron was not well so I knew there was a chance I might be playing, but a couple of hours before just when we got in the changing room.”

It was his first start under Still and first since January 1, so despite it coming as a surprise and with no time to practice he was ‘desperate to impress’.
