Ainge gets back to basics for Hatters

A heart to heart with manager Paul Buckle saw Simon Ainge rediscover his best form against Matlock on Saturday, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 24-year-old defender, currently on-loan from Guiseley had turned in a number of impressive displays since joining, none more so than the 2-1 win at Forest Green Rovers.

After Town were hit for five by Newport on Tuesday, and Ainge admitting his standards had been slipping, a talk with his boss saw the centre half get back to basics.

He said: “The last couple of games I’ve had a dip in form, I think everyone has, but I feel like I’m coming out of that.

“I was brought here for a reason, I’m here because I’m a good defender and I’m good at winning the ball, I’m an aggressive player, I’m good at doing that.

“So I need to go back to that and I thought I did.”
