Adapting to conditions was key to Nuneaton win says Guttridge

Adapting to the conditions proved key for Luton as a stunning second half display saw them hammer Nuneaton Town 5-0 at Liberty Way at the weekend, writes Mark Wood.

Town struggled to deal with a tricky wind and bobbly pitch in the first half on Saturday, but once they came to terms with it they let rip in the second period.

Goalscoring midfielder Luke Guttridge said: “It was a great result in the end. It was a bit of a frustrating first half, but we dug in and we’re at the results end of the season rather than trying to get good performances. Thankfully we were dangerous in the second half and scored plenty of goals.

“They are a good team, they’re up near the top of the league and they’ve got some good individuals as well. Both teams played on the same pitch and I think they adapted better than us, but like I’ve said all season, we’ve got dangerous players in our team and we’re strong at the back so it’s a great formula for winning football games.”

With the Hatters playing such a thrilling brand of attacking football the 31-year-old midfielder believes teams simply can’t live with Luton for the full 90 minutes.

He continued: “I just think, like I said to a few of the boys, teams will try and match us and it’s difficult at the top of the league, everyone wants to beat us, everyone’s going to raise their game, it’s hard work, there’s no denying that. Teams raise their games to play us and we’ve got to find a way of overcoming that.

“And I think what’s happening is it’s coming to about 60, 70 minutes into a game and they start getting tired and they can’t match our endeavour and that’s where good teams come strong.”

The self-critical midfield man played down his own contribution on the day, but felt as a unit they are performing admirable.

He added: “Personally I don’t think I’ve played very well at all today, but I’ve still managed to come up with a goal and set one up and have a hand in another.

“It’s a team game, the back four - we defend as a team and scored as a team - so at the moment everything is going well, we’re having clean sheets and we seem to be scoring at every opportunity we seem to get.”
