Leaders Ampthill Town increased their lead at the top of the Molten Spartan SML Premier Division to nine points with a 5-1 home win over Biggleswade United on Tuesday night.

They completed the double over their visitors thanks to Christian Lester’s hat-trick and Danny Watson’s double as they earned another midweek five-goal haul.

Watson gave Town the lead on seven minutes when he capitalised on a misunderstanding in the defence and rifled the ball home.

He had other openings to add to the lead, but Jamie Peters levelled the scores on 26 minutes as the sides were tied at the break.

Town retook the lead five minutes into the second half when Lester fired home a 20-yard shot.

This was the signal for Ampthill to press home their advantage and Phil Draycott had a shot tipped over before Watson again called Triston Thomas into action.

Ampthill showed plenty of style and it paid off with three goals in a 15-minute spell late in the half.

Lester added two more goals on 65 and 73 minutes after good teamwork and Watson finished the scoring with his second 11 minutes from time after good work down the right by Alvin Rajaram.

They will be looking to complete another double on Saturday when they entertain London Lions, having beaten them 5-1 away earlier in the season, and then go to Hatfield on Tuesday.

Attendance: 31.
