It's the final countdown for Ampthill Town

Following two fine home wins in the league, Town had to come from behind to book their final spot in a patient but assured manner.

Kent are unbeaten in Division Two and will be regretting several missed chances as they had the better of the first half before Town hit back with two second half strikes.

The Lutonians pressed from the off and Town keeper Jack Ambler made a good save from a rebound and produced a fingertip save from a Sean Downey lob.

After missing out on early chances, Athletic went ahead from the penalty spot when Ashley Mead was guilty of a push and Mike Moss drove home the spot kick.

Kent missed openings to go further ahead before the break, with Pat Daly skying a shot from close range.

Town were encouraged by the visitors’ lack of finishing, and Draycott and Danny Butler both went close early in the second half.

Town got their reward for an improved second half display when Frazer Maidment levelled with a clinical shot after good work by the busy Draycott.

Brad Clarke might have done better with a header, but Ambler was on top form and pulled off another great save to deny Kent the lead.

It was Town who grabbed the winner in the 75th minute when Danny Butler’s pinpoint corner found brother Ben who headed home.

Openings fell to both sides before the end, but Town prevailed to reach their second Trophy final in four years.

It was a tremendous performance all round; defending well in the early stages before replying with some nice link play and the two winning goals.

Ampthill beat Crawley Green four years ago at Langford and maybe the leap year can be a good omen.

Town’s opponents are Kempston Town and Bedford College at Barton Rovers on Wednesday, March 2 at 7.30pm.

In the meantime, Town will be looking to maintain their good spell when they host league leaders Crawley Green on Saturday, following a narrow defeat in the reverse fixture a few weeks ago.
