Ampthill Town have had a mixed first week to the new league season - beginning it with a fine 2-0 win at Hatfield but going down 2-1 at Winslow on Tuesday.

Town dictated on their visit to the Gosling Stadium on Saturday and were worthy 2-0 winners. Both goals came in the second half with Joe McCabe firing home a 25 yard free kick on the hour and Brad Clarke finishing off a well worked move ten minutes later.

The visitors’ winning margin would have been greater had it not been for the woodwork with Neil Mallett hitting the post twice early in the second half, and Brad Clarke being denied similarly late on.

Ampthill were frustrated in the first half by three great saves from the home keeper but went on to wrap up three vital points.

Town were looking to build on the good start at Winslow on Tuesday and took the early initiative with a goal inside the first ten minutes.

Brad Clarke was brought down and though Mead’s spot kick was saved Jamie Burnapp followed up to score.

Ampthill were prominent early on and had openings to increase their lead with Mallett finding the side netting after rounding the keeper just one of the chances as they opened brightly.

But Winslow forced some corners late in the first half and levelled through a header to stun Town.

Winslow proved a stronger outfit after the break and Town had to fight to remain on level terms.

Ampthill had an opportunity to relieve the pressure when Brad Clarke broke away but nobody was on hand to finish off his cross.

The hosts continued to test Town’s defence but when Mead tackled rashly the free kick was crossed into the danger area to be sidekicked home for the winner.

Sean Green in the Town goal had earlier pulled off a double save as Town’s promise earlier in the game brought no reward.

Ampthill travel to Hillingdon on Saturday and will be looking for a more positive display in all areas.
