Eagles enjoy cup win

BEDFORD Town kept their cool to record a 3-1 win at home to St Neots Town in the Southern League Cup on Saturday, writes Roger Worsley.

The visitors started well and were unlucky not to take the lead within the first five minutes when Stefan Moore ran on to a long ball from Rene Steer. The former Aston Villa striker drew goalkeeper Michael Kavanagh but saw his attempted lob fall wide of the mark.

Moore atoned for his early miss with the opening goal on 13 minutes when he latched on to another long ball aimed at the edge of the Bedford area and smashed the ball past Kavanagh.

James Faulkner was unlucky not to equalise in the 20th minute when connecting with Jamie Cole’s corner, but his header was just too high.

The equaliser came just three minutes later though as Gareth Price threaded the ball through the defence to Drew Roberts and he rounded Jordan Gent before smashing past Michael Duggan to grab goal number 11 for the season.

The Eagles were denied by the bar a couple of minutes later when a cross from the right was headed by Ollie Thorne over Duggan, but the ball bounced off the woodwork.

Gavin Hoyte has had a memorable - if not fondly remembered - last couple of games. Sent off the previous week, Hoyte was taken off with 10 minutes of the half remaining with blood pouring from a head wound. Although the Bedford captain returned a few minutes later he was substituted at half time and sent to hospital where he required stitches.

In injury time of the first half, St Neots nearly retook the lead, but from point-blank range Kavanagh saved Moore’s effort.

Early in the second half, Kavanagh again blocked Dan Jacobs’ effort from point blank range.

On 62 minutes, Gent’s header was cleared off the line by Paul Cooper and from the clearance, Eagles went in front, as Manny Richardson found Price, who set up Faulkner to slot in his second of the campaign.

The visitors almost immediately replied from the restart as Lewis Hilliard’s teasing cross from the right found Lewis Webb, who astoundingly headed over the open goal.

Town added to their tally a minute into stoppage time as Roberts’ free kick rebounded into the part of Jamie Cole, who steered his shot into the corner of the net.

Bedford’s scheduled game in the league on Tuesday night at home to St Albans City has been postponed as City have an FA Cup replay against East Thurrock.
