Bedfordshire League preview

Preview Saturday, February 26

Premier Division supported by Sportsform action brings about a home game for league leaders Shefford Town & Campton at Rectory Road against Sharnbrook. The hosts defending their season’s unbeaten home record against a visiting Sharnbrook side that hits the road with a 50% win strike record away from their Lodge Road base this season.

At Harvey Close,Caldecote having been beaten just once on home soil this season face fellow championship contenders Wilshamstead in what in effect is a must win game for both clubs.

For the other leading title contender in action, Blunham, it’s a trip to Hillgrounds to take on an AFC Kempston Town side that badly requires points in their quest to avoid relegation at the other end of the table. With Blunham on an 11game unbeaten run, you would perhaps still fancy them to collect the spoils despite The Town being unbeaten in their last three home starts.

Over at Oakley Playing Fields, Oakley Sports will be playing hosts to Woburn. On home soil the Sportsmen have been beaten twice this season, whilst the visitors are now without a win in their last five outings, results which suggest this game will go the way of the home side.

Other action comes at Steppingley Road, the venue where hosts Flitwick Town take on Leighton United. With the Town having only won once in their last seven outings, you would expect United to at least gain a share of the spoils. Plus at Horseshoes Close, it’s local derby action between hosts Dunton and Arlesey Town Reserves. With the hosts unbeaten in their last four home outings you would expect them to triumph over a Town side that are yet to win on the road this season.

The big game of the day in Division One comes at Miller Road with the clash between the title heavyweights Bedford Hatters and their visitors Marston Shelton Rovers. Hatters defending their season’s 100% home record against a Rovers outfit whose lone away defeat of the season came at fellow title contenders Potton Wanderers back in early November.

Talking of Potton Wanderers, this weekend they make the short journey to Bedford Road Recreation for local derby action against a Sandy side that are currently unbeaten in their last nine starts and could well send The Wanderers home empty handed for only the second time this season.

Down at the other end of the league table, basement club Luton Old Boys take on Bedford Sports Athletic at Chaul End Lane, with the visitors notoriously bad travellers, just a third home win of the campaign could well be on the cards for the hosts.

Also in need of points at the wrong end of the table are AFC Kempston Town Reserves, these however are unlikely to be forthcoming when they journey to Mowsbury Park looking for their first away point in five outings against FC Meppershall.

Caldecote Reserves are also too close for comfort to the drop zone, they could well ease that situation when at Harvey Close, they look for their third home win on the bounce against a Meltis Albion side that has been beaten in their last two trips away from their Miller Road base.

The final action in this Division belongs to local derby action on The Green between hosts Ickwell & Old Warden Reserves and their visitors Henlow. The visitors have not won on the road since mid-September, thus giving the hosts a fine chance of returning to winning ways following four straight defeats.

The Division Two promotion race perhaps still concerns seven teams, for two of the leading contenders Arlesey Social Galacticos and Lea Sports PSG,it’s a meeting at Arlesey Recreation Ground.Social having slipped up in three of their last four home outings facing a PSG side that has won six of its nine away outings to date this season.

Of the other promotion candidates, three will this weekend enjoy home advantage.Clifton at Whiston Crescent facing a Westoning Recreation Club outfit that are beginning to find form and could well cause a surprise.

Whilst at The Warren, you would fancy Elstow Abbey to collect the full three points when visited by Lidlington United Sports who have won just twice on the road all season.

The trio of home sides being made up by Bromham United who host Shefford Town & Campton Reserves at their Playing Field Headquarters United despite losing their last two home encounters starting favourites to collect the points from a Town side who have won just once in their last 11 outings.

Promotion candidates hitting the road will be Kings AFC to Barford Playing Fields to face hosts Great Barford.Kings looking for their fifth away win on the bounce, the favourites to collect the spoils despite the home side having only lost twice on home soil this season.Plus Queens Park Crescents who head for a Groveside meeting with Marabese Ceramics. The Crescents in search of their third away win on the bounce, whilst The Tilermen are looking to repair the damage of two consecutive home defeats.

The final action in this division seeing Stopley Park now unbeaten in their last three away games head to face a Stevington outfit that has failed to win any of its last seven outings to plummet into the relegation zone.

Division Three action, takes the runaway league leaders Pavenham along to Hillgrounds for a meeting with Royal Oak Kempston, The Oak despite winning three of their last four outings will still start second favourites to prevent Pavenham retaining their seasons 100% away record.

For second place Sharnbrook Reserves, its home Lodge Road action against local rivals M & DH Oakley. The hosts, winners of their last four home outings, will be well aware their visitors have won their last three games and will be no pushovers.

Over at Renhold Playing Fields, Renhold Village entertain Co-op Sports, the visitors on a six game unbeaten run and still very much in the promotion picture expected to collect the points against a Village side that has failed to win any of its last three home outings.

Down at the other end of the table, Westoning Recreation Club Reserves will be in home Greenfield Road action against Sundon Park Rangers. The Rec Boys last won on home soil as long ago as late October and will have to be at their very best if there are to end The Rangers run of four consecutive victories.

Whilst Digswell Playing Fields will be the rearranged venue where Cranfield United Reserves play their home game against bottom of the table Shefford Town & Campton A.United hitting the road looking to take their unbeaten ways up to 10 games.

The final action in this division coming at Jubilee Playing Fields, the venue for Wilshamstead Reserves home clash with Dunton Reserves. The hosts going in search of home win number four on the bounce.

In Division Four, its home action for league leaders AFC Turvey when they entertain Clifton Reserves at Stonefields, despite the hosts still being 100% for the season, this will be no penalty kick as the visitors have won their last five games to move themselves onto the fringe of the promotion race.

For second place Goldington, it’s a trip to Mowsbury Park to face Bedford Park Rangers. With the home side having won just three times on home soil this season, the odds are on the visitors chalking up their fifth away win on the bounce.

Of the other promotion candidates,Thurleigh take a break from league action and hit the road for Pirton Recreation Ground to face Lea Sports Reserves in a Watson Shield last 16 tie. Whilst following two straight home defeats, Eastcotts will fancy their chances of returning to winning ways when they host Sandy Reserves at Hillgrounds. The visitors hitting the road having lost all of their last six away outings.

Dinamo Flitwick are also still in the promotion mix and for them its home Hinksley Recreation Ground against Stewartby Village. The Villagers only away win of the season came as long ago as early October, a fact that suggests the points will be going the way of the home side.

With games in hand, Potton Town could also yet become promotion candidates, for them, now unbeaten in their last three away encounters, its action at Hillgrounds against a Kempston Athletic side that has won just twice on home soil all season.

The days final action coming at Wootton Recreation Ground, the venue for Wootton Village home clash with Goldington Hammers, the bottom of the table hosts seek out their first home win of the season.
