Bedfordshire League preview

Peter Francis previews the games for Saturday, September 22

The pick of the Premier Division supported by Sportsform action this weekend looks to be The Harvey Close clash between hosts Caldecote and the visiting Bedford Hatters. Sitting second in the league table, The Hatters hit the road looking to revenge the double Caldecote inflicted upon them last season.

Another of this seasons expected title contenders hitting the road are Oakley Sports M&DH, they head for a Hillgrounds meeting with AFC Kempston Town & Bedford College to defend their season’s perfect 100% record. Whilst after their slow start to the campaign,Shefford Town & Campton head to Lodge Road knowing nothing less than the full three points will do if they are going to get in the championship mix again this season when they take on Sharnbrook.

Two clubs that have started the season much better than the reigning champions meet on The Green, the venue at which current league leaders Ickwell & Old Warden play hosts to third place and still unbeaten Arlesey Town Reserves. Whilst over at Hurst Grove, Lidlington United Sports defend their season’s unbeaten ways when they receive a visit from fellow newly promoted club Bedford Sports Athletic who travel looking for their first point/points of the season.

Just down the road at Marston Playing Fields, hosts Marston Shelton Rovers will fancy their chances when visited by a Blunham side that are yet to win this season, a comment that also applies to Renhold United at their Playing Field Headquarters when called upon by Flitwick Town who likewise travel without a win to their name this campaign.

The final top-flight game being at Jubilee Playing Fields where hosts Wilshamstead currently sitting on the bottom of the league table entertain AFC Biggleswade the club just immediately above them in the standings.

In Division One several of the day’s fixtures look to have that away win feel to them. Third place Caldecote Reserves visit to King George VI Playing Fields to face Kings AFC and league leaders Leighton United’s trip to Rectory Road to be hosted by Shefford Town & Campton Reserves looking the banker bets. Whilst Lea Sports PSG who head for a Chaul End Lane meeting with Luton Boys, will despite being winless this season be the favourites to collect all three points on offer.

The banker home win could well be that of Shillington, they at Greenfield’s receive a visit from bottom of the table AFC Kempston Town & Bedford College Reserves. Whilst the other two fixtures are much harder to call, second place Pavenham at their Playing Fields headquarters being called upon by fourth place Sandy and in Mowsbury Park, the visitors to face hosts Brickhill Tigers are Elstow Abbey.

In Division Two, Mowsbury Park action sees league leaders Goldington look for their third home win on the bounce when visited by a Queens Park Crescents side who are still without a win this season.Whilst you would fancy the chances of Bromham United retaining their season’s perfect home record when visited at their Playing Field headquarters by Westoning.

However, despite winning their last two outings things might not be that easy for Meltis Albion at Miller Road when called upon by Eastcotts AFC and at Leagrave Park for third place and still 100% for the season St Joseph Reserves in their local derby action against fourth place Sundon Park Rangers.

The other three games in this division being much harder to call. At their new home base of Ickleford Recreation Ground, Marabese Ceramics perhaps will be the slight favourites to collect the points when they play hosts to Stopsley Park.A comment that would also apply over at Crawley Road when the visitors to face Woburn Athletic are Potton United Reserves and for Oakley Sports M&DH Reserves at their Playing Field base when second from bottle of the table Cranfield United Reserves come calling.

The pick of the Division Three fixture list looks to be the local derby clash at Horseshoes Close between hosts Dunton and league leaders Clifton, but no less intriguing will be the Cutler Hammer meeting between second place hosts Marsh Leys and the visiting still 100% Ickwell & Old Warden Reserves.

Over at Stevington Playing Fields, unbeaten and fifth place Stevington will start the favourites to overcome Potton Town, a statement that might also apply to Riseley Sports despite them sitting on the bottom of the league table when they open their Gold Street season with a visit from Kempston Hammers Sports who will travel looking for their own first win of the season.

Of the other three fixtures, its a clash between third place Westoning Reserves and their fourth place visitors Wilshamstead Reserves at Greenfield Road. Whilst Bedford Park Rangers are heading for a Great Barford Playing Fields encounter with Great Barford and Renhold United Reserves on their way to Hillgrounds to face second from bottom of the table Royal Oak Kempston.

The early season talking point in Division Four is the form of Bedford Panthers, next up to meet them at their Hockey Centre headquarters are Dunton Reserves. Whilst at The Warren, league leaders Elstow Abbey Reserves should have enough in the locker to prevail over third place Kempston Con Club Sports.
