Ampthill earn a home replay in FA Vase

Ampthill Town earned a home replay after their weekend FA Vase trip to Essex but it was an injury time equaliser from hosts Barkingside that denied Town a win at the first time of asking.

Ampthill settled quickly and after testing out the home defence for much of the half, Michael McKenzie rifled them ahead midway through the first half with a powerful shot from the edge of the area.

Ampthill Town had other chances and although Barkingside improved in the second period, Town dealt well with most of their attacks.

Lea Coulter and Danny Nicholls both had great chances to make sure of the tie when put through but from a late injury time corner, Barkingside forced home the equaliser.

Extra time came and the sides could not be seperated with chances coming Town’s way again though Jamie Bewick pulled off a great save late on.

The replay is at Ampthill’s Woburn Road tomorrow (Tuesday at 7.45pm).

Ampthill are in cup action again on Saturday when they go to Dunton in the Beds FA Senior Trophy.

They took the lead on 60 minutes through Tom Hall while James Braithwaite’s 82nd minute strike sealed his side the £750 FA Vase prize of offer.

AFC Kempston Rovers bowed out of the FA Vase at Hadley for the second successive season, again by a single goal.

The match was played on Friday evening and a goal from Jesse Reynolds some nine minutes into extra time put the Walnut Boys out.

In the United Counties League, Olney missed the chance of returning to pole position in Division One as they shared the spoils with Bourne Town for the second time this season.
