Flying the flag for Bedfordshire in the medals table

WE have all mulled it at some point: If Bedfordshire was to break away from the rest of the UK and become an independent nation (bear with us here) how would we get on in the Olympics?

Well as far as this year’s Games is concerned the answer seem to be - pretty well!

After cyclist Victoria Pendleton’s silver in Tuesday’s women’s sprint, our county’s haul would put us joint 25th in the national rankings, alongside Usain Bolt’s Jamaica.

We would be ahead of nations such as Spain, Canada and India.

So far Bedfordshire has claimed Victoria’s silver in the spring and gold in the keirin, Etienne Stott’s gold in the Men’s C-2 Slalom, and a bronze in the men’s eight thanks to cox Phelan Hill.

Former Bedford College man Nigel Levine could still add to that tally in the 4x400m final at the end of the week.

And if you are feeling particularly buoyed with local pride and wish to include Greg Rutherford in that mix after his gold in the long jump, that takes our tally to three golds, and 18th in the world rankings between New Zealand and South Africa.

How Bedfordshire sits in the Olympic tables:

1st: China 34 gold, 21 silver, 18 bronze

2nd: USA 30 gold, 19 silver, 21 bronze

3rd: Great Britain 22 gold, 13 silver, 13 bronze

23rd: Brazil 2 gold, 1 silver, 5 bronze

23rd: Poland 2 gold, 1 silver, 5 bronze

Bedfordshire 2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze

25th: Jamaica 2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze
