Suffolk thwart Beds ladies in final

BEDFORDSHIRE Ladies reached the final of a Twenty20 competition at Mildenhall CC last month.

With games against Suffolk and Norfolk, Beds were the underdogs but started against Suffolk where they restricted their opponents to 132-5 from 20 overs.

Anisha Thind was the pick of the attack with 1-14, while Helen Williams and Karen Bowyer took a wicket each and there were run outs from Thind and Julie Clarke.

Beds’ innings didn’t get off to a great start with Katie Metcalfe bowled in the first over, and although Bowyer swung her bat well for 40 from 51 balls, her side ended 45 runs short on 87.

Next up were Norfolk and Beds bowled superbly with standout performer 13-year-old Laura Carter who took 3-14, while Metcalfe claimed two wickets with Amie Nichols and Clarke taking one each as their opponents reached 84-7.

Needing to reach the target inside 15 overs to progress, Beds fell to 30-2, before solid contributions came from Metcalfe (12) and Clarke (18). With four needed from the 15th over, Nichols smashed a boundary to take Beds into the final where they met Suffolk. Two wickets in the first two overs for Nichols and Metcalfe gave the county a lift, but Suffolk still posted 127. Thind then scored 18 not out, but Beds ended on 77, to lose by 50 runs.
