County fall just short after dramatic run chase

A thrilling run-chase saw Bedfordshire fall just short of the required 310-run target set by Norfolk at Luton Town & Indians CC in their Minor Counties Championship Eastern Division on Tuesday.

The hosts finished justy seven runs short on 303-8 as the draw and bonus points were sufficient to lift them off the bottom of the table – even though they were deducted two points for a slow over rate for the third time this season.

However it was still Bedfordshire’s best performance of the season, and just a shame they saved it for the very last game.

Norfolk had first use of a perfect batting wicket and they took full advantage, rattling up 350-9 with opener Sam Arthurton stroking 158.

Nevertheless the home bowlers stuck to their task to pick up maximum bonus points with Colin Griggs and Andy Reynoldson taking three wickets apiece.

Then a superb innings by George Thurstance – 105 from 125 balls – got the Bedfordshire reply off to a flyer, but there was the usual middle order collapse with 169-3 becoming 174-6.

Martin Weightman (63) and the promoted Griggs (41) came to the rescue with a seventh wicket stand of 91 and with James Kerr (37) also batting well, Beds were able to total 333.

With the pitch showing no signs of deterioration, the Norfolk batsmen enjoyed themselves again second time around and they were able to declare at 292-4.

Dan Simpson and Steve Stubbings got the Beds run chase off to a good start, putting on 75 for the first wicket.

When Thurstance joined Stubbings the run-rate really stepped up with Thurstance once again in great form, only to run himself out for 35.

At tea Bedfordshire were in a strong position at 164-3, but Stubbings was bowled for 84 immediately afterwards and Weightman and Reynoldson soon followed.

Oliver Clayson raised their hopes with a spirited knock of 46 before he once again perished to the dreaded reverse sweep.

Matt Goss, on only his second appearance for the county, played brilliantly to make 49 before he was caught down the leg side and with him went their last hopes of victory as they had to settle for a draw.

Scores: Suffolk 350-9 and 292-4dec; Bedfordshire 333 and 303-8.
