County kids march on

Bedfordshire’s County Youth Team continued its march to the regional title and National Championships at Yarmouth with their fifth successive victory of the year on Sunday.

They followed wins against Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex, with a 32-13 defeat of Hertfordshire.

Before the match started, the top of the region table was a five-way tie between four Beds players and one Herts player.

The Herts player ended with two wins out of four but fell to Beds captain and England international, Tom Church (Wilden) and man of the match, James Molloy (Dunstable), with both Beds players winning four out of four.

As a consequence of other results, he will have fallen to fifth place in the standings at best.

Beds started the day with seven players in the top eight in the region and all of these players, including Church and Molloy, won enough frames to keep them in the top 10 – with Josh Riddaway (Greenfield), Chris Wells (Luton), Adam Toms (Brogborough) and Fintan McCann (Bedford) winning three each and David O Brien (Bedford) two.

Joel Riddaway (Greenfield) stood just outside the top 10 before the day and won three so may have joined his other team-mates in the new top 10 rankings.

In addition, two of Beds’ newest players reached milestones with Jack Moriera (Luton) making only his second start of the season and Cody Beckett (Bedford) winning his first game.

Now halfway through the season and with five wins out of five, the team is in the driving seat to win the regional title.

Reigning champions Suffolk roll into town on July 16 to start the second half of the season.
