The expert Woburn Sands angler brought 23lb 11oz of bits to the scales from peg 62 at Kempston to beat 67 other contestants to top spot in Sunday’s (September 8) charity match.

For many anglers, fishing the four sections at Biddenham and Oakley, proved to be very tough going while the top four all came from the four Kempston sections. Chris Roberts took the runner-up spot with 21lb 10oz from Alex Graham (19lb 11oz), while the biggest individual fish was caught at Oakley where section winner Mick Burrell had an 8lb 5oz bream in his 12lb 11oz bag.

The contest, which was organised by Graham Palmer and Alex Haywood on behalf of Blunham Angling Club, raised over £800 for Bedford Hospital’s Primrose Unit.

Retired ear, nose and throat surgeon Mr Gordon Beardon represented the charity and was on hand to present the prizes.
