Brilliant Beds batter Cambs

The Bedfordshire youth pool team continued their dominance of Region Four with a 31-13 win in Cambridgeshire, despite two of their strongest players being unavailable as they were out of the country.

That result, combined with Suffolk beating Norfolk, Beds’ closest challengers, means that a win in Norfolk next month will secure the county the title for the first time since 2002, when most of this team had not even started school. Man of the match, Liam Murnane (Dunstable), made a welcome return to the team, winning all four matches alongside captain Tom Church (Wilden), Taylor Hart (Luton) and Adam Toms (Brogborough).

Vice captain Josh Riddaway (Greenfield) kept himself in second place in the individual rankings for the region, and well on course for England Trials, with three wins from four, as did James Molloy (Dunstable), who kept himself in the top five. Fintan McCann (Bedford) also kept his England Trial hopes alive, while there were solid performances from Joel Riddaway (Greenfield) and Callum Flecknell (Luton) with Matthew Benson (Houghton Regis) making his debut for the season and winning his frame.

Chris Wells (Luton) kept himself in the race for England U21 trials and Jake Baldwin (Houghton Regis) was unlucky, but as the youngest member of the team has years ahead of him. The team was completed by fellow youngster Jack Moriera (Luton). Next stop for five of the team is the U16 National Grand Prix in Leicester on September 25.

Meanwhile, the Mens A team won 24-20 and Mens B Team lost 23-21, both against Cambs.
