Smith sees off Grimes in double-quick time

LUTON light welterweight Duane Grimes lasted just 1.20mins as he was destroyed by Alfie Smith at the Bedford Corn Exchange on Friday night, writes Mark Wood.

It was a devastating performance from Smith as he scored his fourth straight win in his four-fight career.

The 19-year-old from Earith, Cambridgeshire, had weighed in for the fight at 10st 3lb 8oz, while Shamrock’s Grimes tipped the scales at 10st 8lb 8lb.

Grimes started off well enough, but was stung by a great overhand left early on as Smith stamped his authority on proceedings.

The Lutonian recovered to test Smith’s defences, but found no real holes before his opponent unleashed an avalanche of punches on the unsuspecting Grimes.

Shaken Grimes was forced back on to the ropes and, unable to reply, the referee was forced to step in as the Lutonian fell to his fifth defeat in six fights and Smith claimed his first stoppage victory.
