Beds claim regional title

The Bedfordshire County Youth Pool Team won the English Pool Association Region Four Youth title for the first time since 2002 on Sunday.

They achieved this with two of the 10 games to spare, beating Norfolk 27-17 at their venue in Attleborough.

The team made a slow start, trailing 7-4 after the first set, but soon got going and only lost 10 of the remaining 33 frames.

Notable performances of the day included James Molloy (Dunstable), who by winning all four frames and becoming man of the match also moved to joint second in the regional singles rankings. He joins team-mates Josh Riddaway (Greenfield) and Adam Toms (Brogborough) in second place, with Beds captain Tom Church (Wilden) leading the way.

The highest ranked players will gain England trials in January and, with Church already an England player, Josh Riddaway, Molloy and Toms are almost guaranteed England Trials now. Joel Riddaway (Greenfield) won three out of four frames, including his first total clearance in a county game, to move closer to England trials himself.

The winning frame came from Taylor Hart (Dunstable), who has rediscovered his form this year with three wins from four and is now looking to impress in 2012.

David O’Brien (Bedford) and Callum Flecknell (Luton) also won three frames, with solid performances from Liam Murnane (Dunstable), Fintan McCann (Bedford) and Jack Moriera (Luton) bringing home the victory.

Young Jake Baldwin (Houghton Regis) also got vital further experience and Matt Benson (Houghton Regis) helped out the Mens B Team.

The win takes Beds to the National Finals in Yarmouth in March 2012, and the remaining two matches of this season will be a chance for players to cement their places in England Trials with six players in the running for the eight available places.

Next stop is the National U18 Championships in November in Kent.
