ATHLETICS: Luton AC qualify for National finals

Luton AC, supported by Luton Rotary club, plus Gibbs and Dandy, entered a men’s and ladies team at the Southern Road Relay Championships at Stantonbury Park, Milton Keynes.

A 12-man team ran alternate long and short legs, while six ladies all completed short legs.

New member Ian Kimpton got Luton off to the best possible start, finishing in pole position on the 7,664m long leg in a new course record of 23.18mins.

Tom Mead took over on the short leg of 5,053m, which he covered in 16.08mins to extend Luton’s advantage to 44secs.

Daniel Woodgate could be forgiven for losing the lead on the next leg as European 10,000m silver medallist Chris Thompson swept past him to eclipse Kimpton’s course record with a 22.35mins effort.

Luton, meanwhile, slowly dropped back through the field with club chairman Paul Brooks, drafted in at the last moment, set the task of keeping the team in the top 25 to qualify for the National finals in Birmingham, which he duly did.

The ladies, however, were always comfortably placed in the top 10 throughout the race with Revee Walcott-Nolan running the fastest leg in 18.27mins and the team finishing in eighth place.
