Ambitious Ampthill snap up former Premiership ace as player/coach

Born in Kettering, 34-year-old Sturgess has been a professional rugby player for 17 years. His 6ft 2in (1.88m), 17st 8lb (112kg) frame has seen him not only renowned for his his scrummaging prowess but also his mobility and skills.

Intially interested in football and cricket, Sturgess began his rugby career late at age 16 for Kettering before joining Northampton Saints aged 17.

He made his Premiership debut off the bench aged 18 against Saracens and started his first game a year later.

Sturgess represented England in the 2002 U21 RWC and his career includes 48 appearances for Northampton Saints, 19 for Connacht and 168 for Exeter as well as the Barbarians.

Ampthill director of rugby Mark Lavery said: “I am delighted that Brett has chosen Ampthill to continue his career, his wealth of Premiership experience will aid our young player development while his leadership qualities will benefit our entire squad.”

Sturgess added: “I am pleased and excited to join Ampthill and I intend to contribute in any way I can both on and off the field.

“Having made the decision to return to the East Midlands with my family Ampthill was an obvious choice sealed by the club’s ambition and ethos which reminds me of Exeter when I joined them in 2007.”
