Netflix: the best new TV and films in May (plus everything else)

May on Netflix brings us bombastic true-crime stories, dystopian dramas from Denmark and a Martin Freeman-led zombie movie.

Here are the best new TV and films coming in May to Netflix UK - along with a list of everything else.

Dear White People (Season 2)

What is it? Satirising a ‘post-racial’ America, Season 2 of Dear White People continues to follow a group of black students at a predominantly white school who face social injustice on a daily basis.

The show's first run debuted to rave reviews, and though it might not have been on the tongues of many viewers, it's an important show raising invaluable questions.

When can I watch it? May 4

The Rain

What is it? The Rain - the streaming service’s first Danish co-production - is a dystopian survival thriller, and looks set to take a drastically different direction from the kind of police procedurals and murder mysteries that Denmark has become famous for.

Expect comparisons to survival dramas like 28 Days Later and The Walking Dead, while its theme of youngsters forming their own society from scratch is an obvious nod to William Golding’s Lord of the Flies.

When can I see it? May 4

The Rain: Netflix’s dystopian Danish drama is not your usual Scandi-noir

Poldark (Series 2)

What is it? The second series of the show based on Winston Graham's novels - and starring Aiden Turner - comes to Netflix.

Following on from the first series, which is already on the streaming service, Poldark continues to rebuild his Cornish estate, battle social injustice, and content with an ever-complicated love life.

When can I see it? May 6

Evil Genius

What is it? As far as engrossing true-crime stories go, it doesn't get more absorbing that Evil Genius (full title: 'Evil Genius - the True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist').

The docuseries investigates the true story of a pizza delivery man who robbed a bank, then was killed by a bomb fastened around his neck.

When can I see it? May 11

Cargo

What is it? Martin Freeman stars in a Netflix original film about a desperate, infected father stranded in rural Australia in the aftermath of a violent pandemic, seeking a new home for his infant child and a means to protect her from himself.

An updated version of director Yolanda Ramke's 2003 short of the same name, Cargo has been picking up favourable reviews, and has been dubbed a "zombie movie with soul and pathos".

When can I watch it? May 18

The Social Network

What is it? In the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal the world's eyes have never been fixed more firmly on social media giant Facebook.

David Fincher's Oscar nominated film - written by Aaron Sorkin - tells the story of founder Mark Zuckerberg's internet success, from a website rating the girls of Harvard on attractiveness to global social phenomenon. Jesse Eisenberg brilliantly plays a driven Zuckerberg, originally out for revenge after a less-than-amicable dumping.

When can I see it? May 18
