Apple finally relaunches its Maps app to rival Google - but only in the US for now

Apple is back as a potential competitor to Google Maps after the tech giant rolled out its new map app across the US.

Apple Maps was launched officially in 2012 but was fatally out-performed by Google, despite increasing popularity in the iPhone range, leading CEO Tim Cook to publicly apologise for the original app's failings.

What is the difference?

Apple Maps provides a more polished style, voice activation, better pedestrian maps, and a "look around" feature similar to Google Street View, and boasts better privacy than the rival software.

"We set out to create the best and most private maps app on the planet that is reflective of how people explore the world today," said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services.

Apple claims that your data will be obscured in their servers by a process called "fuzzing" and will be deleted after 24 hours of use maintaining better privacy than Google.

"It is an effort we are deeply invested in and required that we rebuild the map from the ground up to re-imagine how Maps enhances people’s lives — from navigating to work or school or planning an important vacation — all with privacy at its core," Mr Cue said.

Google Maps is usable on all Android and Apple devices whereas Google software can be used on any device. Google Maps also works offline.

When will it be available in the UK?

Apple hasn't said exactly when Maps is coming to the UK, but Mr Cue said: "We look forward to bringing this new map to the rest of the world starting with Europe later this year."
