Charity Emmaus Village Carlton is calling for entrants to its second annual Festival of Scarecrows this week.

The whacky event was born last year, with 20 entrants creating a variety of wonderful scarecrow friends, from cosy couples taking tea in the garden to footballing legends in the clothing boutique.

This year’s fun is on Friday and Saturday, August 15 and 16 and is open and free to all, from 10am until 4pm.

Pauline Curl, operations manager, said: “This festival is designed to provide a bit of fun for the whole family. Sometimes the summer holidays can seem very long, however nice the weather is. Why not get the everyone involved in making a scarecrow that represents your interests? Then you can bring your scarecrows down and choose where you’d like them to sit on site.

“Last year, a local drama group - that often gets its props in our shops - staged a murder in the library, and we had a beardy ghost haunting our furniture store. We even had a photo entry from a customer who had made a scarecrow but couldn’t make it along on the day. We can’t wait to see what turns up this year.”

The centre is in School Lane, Carlton, Bedford MK43 7LQ and is held the on the same weekend as a popular toy sale, with many quality toys, puzzles and games reduced to just 50p.

If you need materials for your scarecrows, the centre can help.
