Willington’s secrets beneath the soil

In 1997 traces of at least ten features were found beneath the grass surrounding the dovecote and stables in Willington.

They are thought to pre-date John Gostwick’s purchase of the manor in 1529 but their exact dates and uses are unknown.

On Sunday, July 29 a group of National Trust volunteers will mark out the shapes and positions of three of the features and explain the layout of the site.

Marking out will begin at 2pm and short explanations, with copies of site plans, will be given at 3pm, 3.30pm and 4pm.

The event has been organised by the Bedford Association of National Trust Members alongside Willington Local History Group.

This is one of the National Trust’s open afternoons from 1pm to 5pm on the last Sunday of each month in the summer. This time there will also be a display entitled Local Buildings and Archaeology.

Visitors can enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake in the church next door.
