Five schools from around the area brought two pupils, winners from the school heats, to take part at this stage where each young ‘chef’ was required to create a main course and a dessert on a budget of £7.50.

Food produced on the day included sticky salmon, chicken chorizo, fruit brulee and treacle tart.

Principal of Castle Newnham Ruth Wilkes said: “We are delighted to take part in this competition which showcases just how talented many of these young chefs are. It also gave them an opportunity to have their food judged by a professionals from the food industry, so overall a great experience.”

Winners of the local heats go onto a regional final to compete for the chance to go onto the national final in London.
