Warning over old A421 road after two seriously hurt in second collision

Bedfordshire Fire Control received a call at 12.24 today after an RTC near the Lidlington junction on the Old Bedford Road. Three fire engines were sent, two from Kempston and one from Bedford fire stations, together with the Special Rescue Unit. When they arrived nine minutes later they found that a car was involved in a collision with a lorry.

Using Holmatro cutting equipment they freed two casualties, a man and a woman, from the car. They were treated at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Addenbrooks for treatment for their serious injuries. The driver of the lorry was uninjured. The incident was closed at 13.30. The road remains closed at the present time.

Station Commander Darren Cook said: “While we cannot comment of the cause of these incidents we are concerned because this is the second serious incident on this stretch of highway in the last fortnight. We are therefore urging all drivers to take special care along this road. Our general advice is for all drivers to keep within the speed limits, be aware of on-coming traffic and avoid distractions like using your mobile phone or eating whilst driving.”

Three people were killed on the same stretch in the early hours of May 29 when their car was in collison with a parked lorry
