Former Bedford Modern School student, Lawrence Smith, is planning a 1,600km charity cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats with six university friends.

Lawrence, 22, who left BMS in 2010 with 10 GCSEs and 4 A Levels, is currently in his fourth year studying Veterinary Medicine at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

The aim of the charity cycle ride is to raise £20,000 for two charities - the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Mind.

The charity cycle ride was inspired by the father of Emma, one of Lawrence’s friends, who tragically suffered with mental illness leading to his death two years ago this summer.

Lawrence said: “He was a keen cyclist and always wanted to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats himself. Last year Emma spoke to me about the possibility of doing this cycle

ride in his memory and between us we got a group of friends together.

“We decided we should use this as an opportunity to raise money for two worthwhile charities and chose the mental health charity, Mind, because of Emma’s father and his problems with depression. Several members of my family, including my father and brother, suffer from diabetes and that’s why I chose the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation as I have seen how research into diabetes funded by this charity has drastically improved their quality of life,” he added.

Lawrence and his companions, Emma Bevan, 22, Elisabeth Matthews, 21, Andrew Lees, 22, Connor Tann, 22, Chris Arran, 22, and Emily Day, 22, start their journey on August 17 and aim to complete the charity cycle ride over a period of 16 days, finishing on September 1.

He added: “We’re so excited to be involved in this trip in support of two great charities both very close to our hearts.
