The work is part of the Transporting Bedford project, the largest ever investment in the towns roads. This investment is set to cut congestion, improve safety for all road users, and boost the local economy.

At this set of roundabouts, new zebra crossings with parallel cycle crossings will be built on each arm of the junction, there will provide safe spaces for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road. New shared use footways will be constructed linking all of the crossings together.

The improvements are expected to take around six weeks to complete. The work will be carried out using temporary traffic lights and is being carried out at the same time as the Network Rail Bromham Road bridge closure.

Once these works have been completed in April, Ashburnham Road will also be resurfaced between Bromham Road and Midland Road, with most of the work taking place overnight.

Bedford Mayor Dave Hodgson said: “This junction improvement is just the latest in a number of works across our town, to cut congestion and improve road safety.

"We are doing these works while Network Rail’s closure of Bromham Road Bridge is ongoing, to minimise disruption to local residents.”

A letter has gone to residents in the area, and a leaflet is being handed out at Bedford train station to make commuters aware.

The Transporting Bedford project is funded jointly by Bedford Borough Council and through the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) Local Growth Fund.
