Three lanes were blocked after a three car collision southbound between J10 and J11, with tailbacks stretching back to J13 for Milton Keynes/Bedford.

The knock on effect clogged a number of roads across Bedfordshire and there was heavy congestion on the A5.

All lanes on the M1 were reopened an hour ago, but slow moving traffic remains.

The Highways Agency is also currently at the scene of an accident on the northbound carriageway just before J12, after a two car collision at around 8.45am.

Last night at around 7.50pm there was another collision at J12, which caused a number of closures.

One woman was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition after suffering chest and abdominal injuries.

A spokesperson for the Magpas Air Ambulance Service said: “At 8.37pm last night, Magpas doctor Leigh Bissett and paramedic Alex Pearce arrived north of Luton on the M1, via the Magpas Rapid Response BMW, following a road traffic collision involving a single vehicle, which left a woman in her teens trapped inside the vehicle.

“The Magpas team assessed the patient who had sustained multiple injuries.

“The Magpas doctor and paramedic sedated the woman and provided her with specialist A&E care on the scene, before working to safely remove her from the vehicle.

“The Magpas team then accompanied the patient to Luton and Dunstable Hospital by land ambulance, where on arrival she was in a serious condition.”
