Bedford Council invests £650k to carry out improvements on Kings Bridge

Bedford Borough Council is investing £650,000 to carry out improvements and prolong the life of Kings Bridge, which provides a vital link across the river for pedestrians and cyclists.

The works focus on repainting, steelwork refurbishment and decking replacement.

The refurbishment is part of the Council’s investment in walking and cycling infrastructure across Bedford Borough.

The works will feature some noisy operations, to take place during the day between 8am-6pm only. This includes necessary grit blasting to remove the existing paint from the structure.

As a result, Bedford Borough Council is contacting residents in the area near the bridge to notify them of the noise increase.

There are expected to be two phases of grit blasting required during this works, the first starting on Monday, November 16, for two weeks and being briefly revisited in early December.

The second phase will start in late January and include a short revisit in early February.

Councillor Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “We are investing millions of pounds across the Borough to improve sustainable travel and the refurbishment of Kings Bridge is another example of this investment in essential walking and cycling infrastructure.

"We apologise for any disruption these improvements may cause and appreciate the patience of residents.

“We have taken steps to help mitigate the increase in noise levels and will ensure that louder works only take place between 8am and 6pm on weekdays.”
