Emergency road works to repair a major leak in Bedford town centre have been completed ahead of schedule.

The road at the junction of St Paul’s Square and Horne Lane was closed from Thursday, January 22, while Anglian Water tried to establish the cause of the leak, causing disruption to motorists during the weekend.

Buses coming into town were diverted, and local routes did not stop in the area.

The water company said the water came from a damaged culvert, which could not be detected by its leakage detection technology.

It added while the road was closed other utilities and contractors carried out additional works to minimise longer-term disruption for the area.

The road was resurfaced and opened overnight on Sunday, ahead of the estimated time of Monday afternoon.

Anglian Water spokeswoman Emma Staples added: “Once again, we are sorry for the disruption this has caused and thank people for their patience while we carried out the repair.”
