Top girl guiding award for Bedford woman

An '˜inspirational' woman from Bedford has risen to the challenge to achieve the highest award in Girlguiding.

Holly Emmerson, 27, was presented with a Queen’s Guide Award by Val Elliott, the Interim Chair of Girlguiding’s Board of Trustees on Saturday.

Holly, who is a leader at 13th Bedford St Andrew’s Brownies, took a year to finish her challenges to achieve this award.

To achieve the prestigious award Holly took on a series of personal challenges in areas such as social action, voluntary work and travel.

These included volunteering in Romania and carrying out research into the impact of extra-curricular activities on the development of children.

Fewer than 150 Girlguiding members are presented with the award each year and these have to be completed before they turn 26.

Holly, who teaches history and RE at Denbigh High School said: “Achieving the Queen’s Guide Award has built my confidence in my ability to get through anything.

“I am already a secondary school teacher and hope one day to become a headteacher.

“My award will help me get there through the skills gained and the fact that it makes me stand out from the crowd.”

Val Elliott said: “These inspirational young women should be incredibly proud of their achievements and I’m honoured to present them with their awards.

“It was a privilege to hear about the challenges they all took on, from developing their skills by organising outdoors expeditions to taking positive action in their communities and further afield.”
