The 13th Bedford Brownies spread some festive cheer by taking part in a four hour marathon of carol singing at Sainsbury’s in Clapham.
They delighted shoppers with they Christmas songs and raised £500, which will go towards funds to send leader Holly Emmerson and 17th Bedford Guide Helena Packer to Romania to run a run a summer school in 2016.
They will be working in the rural area of Godinesti where most of the children do not receive any formal schooling because they go to work from a very young age and live in shacks. While there the volunteers will run programmes on health and wellbeing for older children and arts and crafts for younger ones, as well as organising sports and drama.
Holly, who helped run a summer school last year, said: “It gives the children the chance to be children, if only for one week a year.”
