The final concert in the Music on Thursdays classical series takes place next week when it welcomes one of the USA’s finest ensembles.

The Escher String Quartet are in Bedford on Thursday, April 30 at 7.45pm and will be in performance at the Bunyan Meeting, Mill Street.

Founded in 2005, the Escher String Quartet from New York has received acclaim for its profound musical insight and rare tonal beauty.

The group was on the BBC New Generation Artists scheme from 2010-2012, giving debuts at both the Wigmore Hall and the BBC Proms at Cadogan Hall, while in its home town of New York the ensemble serves as Artists of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Its music-making combines a rich romantic sound with the precision and clarity of a top-quality ensemble.

The quartet takes its name from the famous Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher, famous for his drawings of endless staircases. The quartet say they were inspired by Escher’s method of interplay between individual components working together to form a whole.

In Bedford, The Escher String Quartet bring this approach to a rich programme of quartets, including Alban Berg’s deeply romantic Lyric Suite, full of coded references to a love-affair; an exquisite and delicate quartet composed by Schubert when he was only 16; and the one and only quartet by the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, a ruggedly expressive work that he subtitled Intimate Voices.

Critics have said: “The Escher Quartet made clear that it is now one of the top young quartets before the public today...This is a group to watch”

“Finely honed technique and a focused ensemble blend are this group’s strong suits...a dark ambrosial brew all its own.”

“The group combined ripe tonal balances with the kind of heedless intensity that comes with youth.”

Tickets for the Bedford concert are £18 for adults, £16 concessions, £5 students (aged 18-25), £2 children (under 18) and are available on the door or by calling 01234 261811.
