Using Google’s Autocomplete function with the search questions ‘Is’ and ‘Why’ we were able to see what the most searched questions were about each county.

Whether the results are a reflection on the actual counties or the people searching is up for debate. But we have tried to be helpful by answering some of the burning questions according to the Google searches.

In Beds, the most Googled search questions are ‘Is Bedfordshire awful’ and ‘Why is Bedfordshire not on Google maps’.

So is Bedfordshire awful? Well two villages in the county are among the top 10 most desirable locations in the East of England according to The Sunday Times. Woburn and Pavenham have been named in the list so it can’t be that awful.

However, it is also home to Luton, a town which has struggled with its image for many years. Previous unwelcome titles for Luton include being voted the ‘dirtiest town in Britain’ and the ‘worst place to live in the UK’.

But it’s not all bad. Luton is best known for its airport, football club and famous carnival – the largest of its kind in Europe.

‘Why is Bedfordshire not on Google maps?’ is a question we struggled with. Because quite simply, it is.

Perhaps the confusion comes from the fact Google doesn’t physically label its UK map by county. But if you type Bedfordshire into Google maps sure enough it will appear complete with towns and villages clearly labelled up.

But what of some of Bedfordshire’s near neighbour counties? The Google Autocomplete search for other counties included:

‘Why is Buckinghamshire postcode HP’ and ‘Is Buckinghamshire posh’.

‘Why is Hertfordshire so expensive’ and ‘Is Hertfordshire a city’.

‘Why is Oxfordshire abbreviated to Oxon’ and ‘Is Oxfordshire going to get snow’.

‘Is Leicestershire ok’ and ‘Why is Leicestershire associated with foxes’.

‘Why is Warwickshire associated with bears’ and ‘Is Warwickshire near Birmingham’.

‘Is Northamptonshire a good place to live’ and ‘Why is Northamptonshire called the rose of the shires’.

It could be worse, though. The most common search for Essex is ‘Why is Essex so bad’ while the capital city is ‘Why is London so crap’.
