A shop in Bedford has had its alcohol licence revoked for persistently selling alcohol to people under 18.

Rice and Spice, in Midland Road, Bedford, failed two test purchase operations carried out by Bedfordshire Police and Trading Standards between August and November 2014. The store was also found to have breached other licensing conditions, including selling alcohol to a person who was intoxicated.

PC Rob Sparkes of Bedfordshire Police’s Licensing Team said: “This is an excellent example of partnership and multi-agency working.

“Bedfordshire Police is committed protecting people and fighting crime, and will continue to work closely with other agencies to take a robust stance with any licensed premise which breaks the law.”

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Community & Regulatory Services at Bedford Borough Council, said: “It is a serious crime to sell alcohol to a child and Bedford Borough Council will work with the Police to take action against any trader who commits this offence.”

The shop has 21 days to appeal this revocation.
