A 96-year-old Second World War veteran will become an honorary member of Bedford’s Polish Club as it celebrates 70 years in the town.

Captain Tomasz Marszalek joined the club when it formed in 1945 after he settled in Bedfordshire following active service with the Allied forces.

Many of the original members were also Polish Army veterens, unable to return to Poland following the war.

Now, The Polish Club, in Alexandra Road, is welcoming everyone to celebrate its anniversary with a family fun event on Saturday (April 12).

Capt Marszalek said: “The Polish Club has been an important meeting place for me and many others over many years, providing support, friendship and a sense of community. I am delighted to be a part of the 70th anniversary celebrations”

The day will begin at 1pm with a parade of the Polish and the Royal British Engineers’ standards. This will be followed by a ceremony and activities including a bouncy castle, Polish food and dancing, until 6pm.
