Royal Mail stamp celebrates work of Sue Ryder

Among the famous names is Lady Ryder, founder of the Sue Ryder charity which runs the St John’s Hospice, in Moggerhanger.

The late Lady Ryder (Baroness Ryder of Warsaw and Baroness Cheshire) founded The Sue Ryder Foundation in 1947 to help people displaced after the Second World War.

Lady Ryder subsequently widened the scope of the charity’s work to include supporting people with complex needs and life-threatening conditions across the UK and internationally.

Today, the charity provides care across the UK in its seven hospices, five neurological care settings, and in the community and people’s homes.

Heidi Travis, CEO Sue Ryder said the stamp recognises “her amazing achievements and influence, and the legacy that she leaves with all of us today”.

She added: “It is a great honour that our inspirational founder has been chosen to have a stamp designed in her name.

“The work Lady Ryder undertook has helped millions of people in this country and abroad and we aim to continue that legacy by providing incredible hospice and neurological care for people facing a frightening, lifechanging diagnosis.”

Sue Ryder St John’s hospice opened in May 1980 and has been providing palliative care and support ever since.

It cares for people aged 18 and over who are living with conditions like cancer, heart failure and lung disease.

That care is delivered in the community and at the 15 bed hospice.
