A convoy from Bedford has arrived in Greece carrying aid to a refugee camp.
The vans, loaded with donated goods, were driven across Europe by five men representing the Friends of Refugees Bedford group.
Shazan Iqbal, Ajmal Khan, Umair Iqbal, Shaheen Uddin and Yasar Khan set off from the Westbourne Centre on Sunday (June 5) and, Despite being stopped and searched by the authorities in England, France and Italy, by Tuesday were ready to board the ferry to Greece from southern Italy.
Now they will be visiting serveral refugee camps in Greece to distribute their provisions, before heading home.
A FOR.Bedfordshire spokeswoman said: “It will be a gruelling journey on the ferries and overland, especially as the group will also be observing Ramadan and abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours, but one which will be rewarding for all concerned.
“FOR.Bedfordshire is proud to be involved with this brilliant initiative and we will work together on future ones too. When the community of Bedford comes together, amazing things can happen.”
