Pupils encouraged to walk or cycle to school

Shortstown Primary School is working with the cycling charity, Sustrans, to promote walking, cycling and scooting to school in a project funded by The Harpur Trust, Bedford Borough Council and Wixamtree Trust.

The school has been working hard to encourage pupils and parents to leave the car at home and actively travel to school. It recently recorded that 33 per cent of its pupils cycled or scooted to school.

Councillor Charles Royden, portfolio holder for environment and transport at Bedford Borough Council, said: “It is really important that our children live healthy lives.

“Walking or cycling to school is a step in the right direction.

“Not only is it great for keeping children active, it’s also good for the environment.”
