Prune a vine to create fine wine

Budding viticulturalists are invited to volunteer at a community vineyard.

You can help at the Old Warden vineyard by pruning some of the 4,000 vines.

The 5.5 acre site is between Old Warden and Cardington. It was originally created by the monks of Warden Abbey in medieval times and in 1986 it was replanted by the Whitbread family.

It is now run as a community vineyard by the Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity in partnership with Shuttleworth College.

Jane Markham, community vineyard manager, said: “We show you what to do and provide all the tools. The sessions are great fun and it’s a great way to shake off the cobwebs and rejuvenate after the hectic activity of Christmas and the New Year.”

Pruning sessions will take place every Tuesday and Friday in January and February. Additionally there will be a Saturday session on January 26.
