Police warning following distraction thefts

Bedfordshire Police has issued important safety and security advice following recent intelligence surrounding distraction thefts.

The are asking the public to remain vigilant and issuing a reminder to residents - particularly the vulnerable or elderly - around being approached in supermarket car parks.

It is thought one offender will approach them to ask for directions, often using a map, while an accomplice steals the victim’s wallet, purse or handbag from the car.

“We would urge all residents, particularly the elderly, to remain vigilant to any suspicious activity and report anyone behaving in a way that makes them feel threatened or uncomfortable,” said inspector Gail Mulvaney.

“Always shield your PIN when entering a checkout or ATM, and be wary of anyone ‘shoulder-surfing’.

“Additionally, make sure your car is securely locked even when you are near it, and keep all handbags and valuable out of sight.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
